This obviously sailor made tool most resembles edge irons used by cobbler's to form and decorate the edges of shoe and boot soles. In older times these tools were made of wood or bone, making this example particularly authentic. This heavy piece of pan bone is a little over 6 inches long and its cross section is a bit over 1 inch square. One end has a central fence and is set for burnishing or forming the edges of two thicknesses of leather or other sole material. The opposite end functions to form some decoration on the sole or heel edge, having one side creasing small decorative bead, and other for a more delicate two bead decoration. Surely used and made by a whale man having shoe making experience his foot wear would have been well above the norm. Good+
