This
set of outside calipers are clearly marked, “Bemis & Call Co. / Cast Steel.”
While Bemis and Call was principally known as a major maker of wrenches in the
19th Century, they did for a time manufacture hardware and
tools—particularly calipers. This example is is a tough one to find being
relatively large (12” high, opening to a maximum gap of 10”), and boasting a
fine adjust mechanism. The tool has tarnish, but almost no pitting. It will
clean up nicely. An owner, “F. T. Mosher” has stamped his name in a couple of
places and added a hand filed “M” in two places on one leg. The outer curved
portions of both legs have clearly been hand wrought. It is a nice older pair
of outside calipers. Good+
