English Brass & Ebony Mortise Gage.
This
style of mortise gage with cylindrical brass stem, full brass wear plate on the
fence and with both fixing and ajusting screws being of the slotted type, as
found on this gage. The thick ebony wood of the fence and weight of the gage
marks this one as being especially nice. While it bear’s no maker’s mark it is
likely by a Sheffield maker, perhaps Marples. This gage is in especially nice
shape without the usual dents and bumps and wood chips. Even the slots in the
brass screws are good condition. It rates as Fine
