I've not seen an example of this simple B & S rule before. It is a six inch rule, marked in eighths and sixteenths on one side, and on the other both edges are graduated in eighths. It is marked by Brown & Sharpe, Providence (with the BS & Square logo). It also “H.G.A.” on the other. This is done well enough to be a factory mark, but it also could be by an owner. I've learved from Rick Slaney that this uncomnon rule made it into the Brown & Sharpe catalogs in 1890 and is a seldom seen rule. It's is just right for a Christmas gift for the seamstrss in the family. Fine.
