Scrimshaw Magnifying Glass.
Carved Whale Ivory Fist Decorated. Fine.
This larger size hand magnifying
glass has an overall length of 13 inches, with a glass that is 4 “ diameter .
The handle and glass rim are brass, with the handle in a twisted “barley” form.
The major distinction (other that size) is that the handle has an attached
finial of a whale tooth, carved in the classic sccrimshaw form of a clenched
fist. This is well done, with good detail, (probably by a whale man), and has
no chips or cracks. The result is a glass that is both useable and decorative.
It is a great item for the den or desk. Fine
