Item NART14 - John F. Kennedy Scrimshaw Collector by Clare Barnes, Jr.  Little Brown & Co. 1964, 1969

Not the best written book on scrimshaw, but still of historical interest, this book belongs in every collectorís library.  Of course JFK interest in scrimshaw was well publicized during his presidency and did more to popularize whalemanís scrimshaw than any other single factor.  This book is more noteworthy for its pictures than its text.  The numerous color plates are well done, and include some examples of scrimshaw that are at the top of quality list (and, sadly, there are some that are not).  What makes the book so valuable is that the collection has been in some ways lost to modern collectors.  Pieces of the Presidentís collection have apparently been scattered to places unknown, and the existing collection has been harbored at the Kennedy Library, and has not been made available for study by connoisseurs and experts in American scrimshaw.  So this book is the best resource available on some very fine examples.  This volume is in excellent condition, with its original dust jacket suffers only a few bumps on the edges.  Of course the pages are bright and tight and complete, with no markings or other faults.  Fine
