This dark and nicely fashioned serving mallet is in the “hammer” form to allow it to be turned over a line or rigging piece to enwrap it (serve) with a ‘whip” binding or protective chaffing gear made of tarred marline. The wood is a dark tropical hardwood—probably a species of ebony-containing just a single streak of sapwood. It is an elegant sailor’s tool. Fine
