Not
a particularly uncommon patented plane, this example of Chaplin’s Improved
Smooth plane is in top condition. It has a long clean blade, marked, “Chaplin’s
/ Improved / Patented” and the raised “Chaplin’s Improved” embossed mark around
the base of the original knob. The tote is the proper crosshatched hard rubber
one. The left side rail is marked, “Chaplin’s Improved / Patented / Apl 17th,
1888 Feb 14th 1899 / Dec. 23rd, 1902”. This is a
non-adjustable throat single bladed smooth plane that has a sole length of 9 ½
inches, including the overhang. It was probably made by Tower & Lyon, but is
not so marked. It is in excellent collectible condition. Fine
